Chromaviso receives support from the Market Development Fund

Chromaviso, in collaboration with Aarhus University Hospital and Glostrup Hospital, has received support from the Market Development Fund to further develop and document the lighting concept, Ergonomic Circadian Lighting. The aim of this project is to create better conditions for patients and staff in areas with round-the-clock activity.

The Market Development Project has a total budget of nearly DKK 10 million, with a 50% subsidy from the Market Development Fund. This innovative and extensive project is the largest of its kind in Europe. It will run until mid-2015 and includes research on circadian lighting, as well as the further development and documentation of Ergonomic Circadian Lighting.

This project is a unique collaboration between private and public companies, working together to create quality and innovation in technology and evidence-based circadian lighting. As a result, the collaboration involves both the clinical and construction departments of both hospitals, as well as Chromaviso.

Chromaviso has already implemented Ergonomic Circadian Lighting in several Danish hospitals, with extremely positive feedback on the solutions. The lighting concept will now be further developed and documented in collaboration with the Neurosurgical Department at Aarhus University Hospital and the Neurology Department N at Glostrup Hospital. The installation of the circadian lighting concept will take place in the second quarter of this year, and the further development of the concept and the research part of the project will begin in early September.

— The vision is to further develop and challenge the existing evidence-based knowledge regarding the use of natural and artificial light and circadian rhythm management in the hospital world, says Klaus Lunding, the hospital director at Glostrup Hospital.

A strong connection between health and the human circadian rhythm

The purpose of this project is to further develop a lighting concept that supports the biological circadian rhythm by ensuring an optimal interaction between natural and artificial light.

The circadian rhythm concept aims to balance the disrupted natural rhythm that occurs when patients experience acute illness. Normalizing the circadian rhythm is crucial for the well-being and recovery of patients. Additionally, it is important to protect night shift workers from the detrimental effects of traditional artificial light while considering the lighting needs for different work situations.

Chromaviso's idea for the lighting concept originated from research indicating a strong connection between health and the human circadian rhythm. This has created a demand for lighting solutions that cater to the need for an optimal circadian rhythm for both patients and night shift workers. The Ergonomic Circadian Lighting also takes into account the differentiated lighting needs of patients and staff. While patients require quick normalization of their circadian rhythm and a calm and restful environment, staff also need light for acute situations, treatment, reporting, and monitoring. It takes special technology and knowledge to integrate these needs into a cohesive lighting solution.

Circadian lighting benefiting patients and staff

— At Chromaviso, we are driven by our understanding of the importance of light for human beings and how our lighting concepts can create optimal conditions for patients and staff. It is crucial for us to develop our solutions in close dialogue with the users so that we can understand and translate their complex needs into simple and user-friendly lighting solutions. We are therefore delighted to have the support of the Market Development Fund and the participation of Glostrup Hospital and Aarhus University Hospital in this project, says Anders Kryger, CEO of Chromaviso.

The aim of the market development project is to create a unique, well-documented, and cost-effective circadian rhythm concept that brings value by improving conditions for both patients and staff.

Ergonomic Circadian Lighting is primarily targeted towards the healthcare sector, especially areas with round-the-clock activity and a need for differentiated lighting. Additionally, the lighting concept can be beneficially applied in areas with 24-hour activity both within and outside the healthcare sector. The product solution will also enable the integration of circadian lighting into larger areas in existing and new hospital constructions in Denmark and internationally.
