Special lighting provides more energy and less headache

Östra Sjukhus utilizes Ergonomic Lighting in their operating and robot rooms to create an optimal work environment for all professionals simultaneously.

Since 2007, Östra Sjukhus has been using Ergonomic Lighting from Chromaviso in multiple operating rooms. When the hospital acquired a new robot room in 2015, they chose to implement Ergonomic Lighting.

— On the robot room, Ergonomic Lighting truly shines. It's a tremendous advantage. We can see the images much better with the red and green lights, explains Anja Fönslund, the technical responsible nurse.

Robot rooms demand high standards for medical equipment and the space itself. It needs to be spacious and flexible - and flexibility is one of the cornerstones of Ergonomic Lighting. The lighting divides the room into colored zones, tailored to the specific specialty and professional group simultaneously.

Combination of red and green light

The colors in the lighting have been carefully selected to create optimal working conditions. Green light behind the screen enhances contrasts and visibility. The red light reduces reflection, and when combined with the red and green lights, it creates a pleasant balance. Chromaviso is responsible for the development of this lighting concept and the red-green color combination.

— We can see the images much clearer in the green light, and the staff doesn't get as tired. In fact, we conducted a survey among the staff regarding the lighting, and it became clear that they experienced less headaches and felt more refreshed, explains Anja Fönslund.

She points out that one of the reasons is that in the pleasant colored light, the staff doesn't strain their eyes as much as they did before Ergonomic Lighting, where they either worked in complete darkness or in normal white light - despite the reflections on the screens.

In the operating rooms, the staff has access to customized lighting settings that are tailored to different procedures, ensuring that the lighting always suits the specific operation. In addition to the colored lights used during the procedures, there is a setting for receiving patients - a warm and soothing white light. Once the operation is completed, a bright white light is turned on for cleaning and preparation. This light also functions as daylight simulation, providing the staff with a boost of light that helps support their circadian rhythm, alertness, and good sleep.

Ergonomic Lighting as the Standard

The impact of the lighting has spread among the staff.

— Surgeons now always request the rooms with Ergonomic Lighting, and anesthesiologists find that patients are better visible in Ergonomic Lighting with the white spot over the patient. Additionally, operating room nurses can easily move around and see instruments and medication without any issues. That's why we would like to have it in all operating rooms. In fact, Ergonomic Lighting should be a standard in all operating rooms, explains Anja Fönslund.

Ergonomic Lighting is used for both laparoscopic surgery and open surgery. In addition to the colored lights, the lighting concept includes a setting with intense white light for open surgery. This allows for a slight reduction in the very powerful operating lamp, thereby reducing glare and flickering for the eyes.

Based on extensive user feedback and expert advice

All lighting settings have been carefully selected based on the department's needs, workflows, and Chromaviso's documented user behavior from similar installations. This ensures high usability and satisfaction among the staff.

— We have received the settings that fit precisely with our work, and Chromaviso has been here multiple times to educate the users and share their knowledge about the lighting. We are very pleased, says Anja Fönslund.

The installation at Östra Sjukhus started with a needs analysis and user dialogue, followed by installation and programming. Once the lighting was ready, the staff was trained on how to use it, and adjustments were made to ensure that the lighting functions optimally in everyday life.

Control and lighting settings

  • 1 operating room
  • 1 Da Vinci robot room

The lighting is controlled through Chromaviso's specially designed control panel, which means that the right light is just a press away. In the operating room, there are nine pre-programmed settings available, tailored to the different procedures.

A selection of the lighting settings includes:

  • Bright white light for cleaning
  • Warm white light for the patient
  • Red-green light for maneuvering
  • Green-red light
  • Conversation

Additionally, the brightness of the light can be adjusted up or down.
