Ergonomic Lighting in 10 High-Tech operating theaters in Norway

Written by Ane Eskildsen | December 8, 2014

At two Norwegian hospitals in Vesterålen and Bodø, ten new operating rooms have been equipped with Ergonomic Lighting from Chromaviso. From November and for three months thereafter, the local area is completely dark around the clock, making the effect of Ergonomic Lighting even more pronounced. With Ergonomic Lighting, it is possible to activate daylight simulation between procedures in the operating room. The use of white daylight counteracts winter depression and contributes to stabilizing the circadian rhythm.

In the summer of 2014, the brand new Nordlandssykehuset Vesterålen was inaugurated in Stokmarknes, located in the northern part of Norway. This groundbreaking hospital introduced two operating rooms equipped with Ergonomic Lighting, a first in Norway. Following suit, the neighbouring Bodø hospital implemented Ergonomic Lighting in five operating rooms and three day-surgery rooms in November 2014.

Colour-coded lighting enhances working conditions

The Ergonomic Lighting installed in the ten new operating rooms in Vesterålen and Bodø is zone-divided coloured light. With Ergonomic Lighting, each work function has its own colour zone tailored to the tasks at hand. Surgeons, anesthesiologists, radiologists, and the assisting staff achieve optimal lighting conditions with minimal eye strain. Glare from screens is avoided, resulting in an improved screen image with enhanced depth and contrast. Between procedures, various shades of white light can be selected. The range of white light combats winter depression and contributes to stabilizing the circadian rhythm. Altogether, the entire staff benefits from improved working conditions with Ergonomic Lighting.

Two state-of-the-art high-tech hospitals in northern Norway

The Nordlandssykehuset HF, a regional hospital in Norway, has undertaken two major construction and modernization projects in the northern region. In Vesterålen, a brand new hospital was built and opened in the summer of 2014. In Bodø, there is an ambitious modernization and construction of a new hospital wing. The new treatment wing, known as Wing K, was put into operation at the end of 2014. The final phase in Bodø is scheduled to be completed in 2018. In total, there are ten state-of-the-art operating rooms from Karl Storz of the OR 1 type in Vesterålen and Bodø. The Ergonomic Lighting is an integral part of the overall concept for the new operating rooms and is supplied by the Danish company Chromaviso.
